“13TH,” which opened the New York Film Festival in 2016, takes its title from the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted,” and explores how the American criminal system became one of several methods of systemic racism and terror. The message is that the dynamics and economics of slavery never went away, but rather took on new forms such as Reconstruction, Jim Crow laws and "the war on drugs."  Nominated for an Oscar, the flim won Best Documentary at the Emmys, BAFTAs and NAACP Image Awards.
