Alumni Morning Ex on WWII Graphic Novel About the Rescue of the Danish Jews

On Monday, October 30, alumnus and parent emeritus Ralph Shayne ’85 will discuss how he created Hour of Need about his mother’s Holocaust escape with the help of the Parker community, including 8th through 12th graders organized in a focus group by 8th grade English teacher David Fuder.

Shayne’s is appropriate for ages 8 through 88 and developed in partnership with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, the book signed by Shayne is available for pre-order prior to the event so that student-attendees and employees might bring a copy home afterwards.

Shayne will describe how he was inspired by Congressman John Lewis’ 2017 visit to Parker to capture his mother’s experience in a graphic novel and how the Parker community supported him on this journey.

Hour of Need is a graphic novel that tells the story of the people of an occupied nation who risked their lives to evacuate their Jewish countrymen to Sweden in small boats. Hour of Need is a tribute to the heroes who worked with Denmark’s Jews to ensure the escape of more than 7,000 people and the concrete and amazing ways humanity triumphs in its darkest hours.
