Members of the 6th grade band had their first performance for an audience of their parents/guardians and vocalist peers in a recent musical gathering.
Music teacher Kingsley Tang invited everyone to come and enjoy the sounds of students who started playing their instruments in the fall. The performance included numbers by the entire grade as well as a sampling of tunes featuring two or more students and their instruments. Selections from “Ode to Joy,” a Russian folk tune and “We Will Rock You” were among the melodies they played.
Following the music, audience members went onto the stage where band members staffed tables with interactive exhibits to teach about the instruments they just played. People had the option to make a bass trombone out of cardboard, build a pan flute out of straws, learn more about note reading, explore percussion and reed instruments firsthand and more.
The toe tapping during the musical numbers and engaged learning that followed were proof positive that musical appreciation can go far beyond performance.
Great job to all involved and enjoy photos from the experience here.
