Sophomore Civic Lab Welcomes Viator House of Hospitality

By US Science teacher Gigi Mathews
Recently, 10th grade Civic Lab hosted Father Corey Brost, executive director of Viator House of Hospitality.

Viator House of Hospitality is an interfaith program that provides a home and services for young men who have fled their homelands by themselves and are seeking asylum in the United States, but have no family to live with while they await their legal proceedings.

We invited Father Corey since the theme of 10th grade Civic Lab is immigration. Through his work, he has a unique perspective on the experience of refugees and what we can do to help them when they arrive in the United States. Father Corey shared stories about why young people are forced to leave their country and about the young people housed at VHH. These actual accounts gave Civic Lab a very “real” feeling.

Since Father Corey’s visit, lots of students have come up to me in the halls telling me how much they got out of this presentation.
