Talking Leaves and Fall in ILIS

By ILIS teachers Sarah Beebe and Mary Catherine Coleman
During their Integrated Learning and Information Science class times, Junior Kindergarten students have been reading books about fall and learning all about the season.

In ILIS classes, we read two books: Hocus Pocus It’s Fall by Anne Sibley O’Brien and Leaves by David Ezra Stein. We talked about how different animals prepare for the changing seasons and spent time reflecting on all of the activities we do during the fall season. Next, we focused on the changing color of the leaves during the fall change of season. We talked about how fall leaves turn red, orange, and yellow.

After we learned about the different leaf colors during this time of the year, JKers made their very own talking leaves! Using an app called Chatterpix, students uploaded pictures of their favorite leaf colors and recorded their voices in the app to make their leaves talk. If you visit the Kovler Family Library, you will find a beautiful fall tree in front of the space with all the JK talking leaves. You can scan the QR code on the leaf, and each JK voice will tell you their favorite fall color.

Please check out this website to see all the JK talking leaves and learn more about the project.
