Three Parker students were recently recognized for their writing talent as recipients of Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards.
Using pieces from recent school years, Milly Graunke’s submission from 4th grade teacher Maureen Cuesta’s class “Brave Rosa, Rosa Brave,” Reed Johnson’s submission from 4th grade teacher Miriam Pickus class “If Livid Were a Creature” and Lucia Almeida’s submission from Upper School English teacher Mike Mahany’s class “The House (Pantoum)” were recognized as winning selections as part of the 8th annual awards. Their poems were included among the 25 winning selections chosen from more than 1000 submissions in Kindergarten through 12th grade students in Chicago.
As Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Award recipients, each of these students received a cash prize, an award certificate, had their piece published, received a tote bag and had a chance to read their winning selection at a special gathering in the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago.
Congratulations to Parker’s winning poets and all of the students recognized with Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards this year.
