Students in the class of 2026 recently had the opportunity to open letters they had written on the day of the 2020 election.
Dean of Intermediate and Middle School Student Life Anthony Shaker visited junior graderoom with a special delivery for students. Back in 2020, Shaker taught 7th grade history at Parker, and the presidential election was top of mind for him and his students that year. This was also the year of the COVID-19 pandemic—marking another milestone in the lives of these young learners. On the day of the election, voting was underway when Shaker asked his students to each pen a letter to their future self, speaking to their hopes—and possibly even fears—for the years ahead.
Before inviting students to retrieve their letter, he reminded them of their experience together in 2020, learning in-person during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the anxiety associated with that election season. Shaker pointed out that election seasons are always important milestones—especially for history teachers—and the 2020 one was especially important for him based on what he experienced that year with students from the class of 2026.
Many students remarked on how they appreciated Shaker for providing them with the opportunity to reminisce about their Middle School experience.
