Coming Together with Chef de Cuisine Damarr Brown
Virtue Restaurant Chef de Cuisine Damarr Brown talked about his professional journey as a Black chef in Chicago and his experiences on the TV program Top Chef in a public event at the school.
As Parker’s 6th annual Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Speaker, Brown shared his personal story, from cooking church dinners in Harvey, Ill., to getting his first big opportunity at the restaurant MK, to playing a crucial role in supporting the careers of other Black chefs in Chicago. He applied to compete on Top Chef multiple times unsuccessfully before finally getting the gig and earning “Fan Favorite” honors while remaining true to himself.
